January 26: HCX | Collaboration: The Haiti Series

12.20.12

The Haiti Series

One Moore Book is a publisher and distributor of culturally sensitive children’s literature. Please join us as we celebrate the launch of The Haiti Series–a collection of six stories that feature the vibrant culture and people of The Republic of Haiti.

The launch event will be an art exhibition of the work of artist Edouard Duval Carrié. The exhibited panels are also featured in Edwidge Danticat’s second children’s book, The Last Mapou, which will be published in this series.

The evening will host live music by Haitian musician Obed Jean-Louis who combines Haitian folk twobadou and roots sounds to create original soulful music that speaks to the world.

Each ticket sold will pay for the purchase and shipping of one book to a child in Haiti through a partnership with the LitWorld Organization. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit Haiti Cultural Exchange, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit organization established to develop, present and promote the cultural expressions of the Haitian people.

Come out and enjoy a night of Haitian music, literature and art.

Love + Serve

About HAUP (Haitian-Americans United for Progress): HAUP is a not-for-profit community based organization that helps low-income families and individuals to live healthy and productive lives. HAUP was initially founded in 1975 to promote the welfare of Haitian refugees and immigrants. Since its founding in 1975 it has broadened its scope and reach to meet the needs of all its constituents regardless of nationality, ethnic origin or background. “We were elated to partner with Ford Model Monica Watkins, founder of Art in Motion, who has partnered with us in bringing much needed support to schoolchildren in Haiti through the Love and Serve program, our youth development initiative.” Elsie Accilien, Executive Director of HAUP www.haupinc.org

About Art In Motion: A movement created by model/artist/philanthropist, Monica Watkins, to discover and give a voice to incredible young talents from the inner-city who have a burning desire to be a part of something greater than themselves. Our mission is to seek out and nurture young, disadvantaged artists to grow, thrive, and effect positive change in the world through visual and performance art. Collectively, Monica and her kids have raised thousands of dollars for Housing Works, GEMS and Stoked Mentoring in NYC, The Diakonos Orphanage and Art Day Celebration in Haiti, and Doctors Without Borders for the Japan Disaster Relief Effort. www.artinmotionshow.com
