Selebrasyon Poster Banner top

Selebrasyon! will be the first of its kind in New York. This festival will bring Haitian, Caribbean, and wider New York communities together to experience Haitian film, dance, music, literary and visual art in venues across the city!

Beginning on Haitian Flag Day on May 18th during Haitian Heritage Month, and running until the end of June which is Caribbean-American Heritage Month, this festival will present events hosted in collaboration with different organizations, institutions and artists.

Seeking to highlight the dynamic presence of Haitians in New York as well as in Haiti and other parts of the Diaspora, Selebrasyon! will provide opportunities for artists, especially those who are emerging, to share their work and build new audiences.

Curated by MoCADA Curatorial Fellows Amanda Reid and Ali Rosa-Salas
Artists: Pamela Council, Sara Jimenez, Sondra Perry and Patrice Renee Washington

Re:purpose features the work of Pamela Council, Sara Jimenez, Sondra Perry and Patrice Renee Washington, four New York-based women artists who transform common domestic and cosmetic objects in order to expand the possibilities of self-representation. These artists redefine an object’s form and function to reveal its hidden histories and how our identities inform our perception.

Through work that is referential, critical and humorous, the artists negotiate their identities in relation to consumerism, popular culture, and the daily experience of inhabiting a gendered and racialized body. By choosing materials of personal significance, they claim a variety of cultural legacies and champion the legitimacy of subjective interpretation. Their work troubles aesthetic hierarchies and generates a critical dialogue around the lived realities of women of color in the contemporary art world.

January 12 – March 8: “Spirit Migration: the floating, the fleeting, the spectral” at BrutEdge Gallery

01.18.14

brut edge spirit migrationEbbing between existential angst and glimmers of that which endures beyond us, art that attempts to represent that supernatural domain just beyond reach is universally recognized as part and parcel of the very impetus to create. In the Caribbean especially, where cultures have crashed together, battled and become an assemblage of disparate ideas and customs – it is religious or spiritual art that challenges viewers most directly with representations of the sacred and the profane.
