Selebrasyon! | Haitian Creatives Series : Wednesday, May 11th

04.20.16

Created by New York-based artist, Richard Louissaint, the Haitian Creatives Series is an ongoing video and photo documentary project. It first began as a long term project to document fusion band Zing Experience in 2010, but as a result of his developing friendship with the Zing, he began to meet a new community of Haitian creatives.  This is about them… the musicians, the painters, the radio hosts, the actors, the singers and all the other creators. Selebrasyon! | Lakou Mizik : Friday, May 6th

04.20.16

Lakou Mizik Banner

In partnership with 651 Arts & BRIC, Haiti Cultural Exchange presents Lakou Mizik!

Lakou Mizik is a collective of Haitian musicians who are bringing new life to Haitian roots music with legends like master drummer Sanba Zao, and young stars like Steeve Valcourt and Jonas Attis. A thrilling, genre blending musical experience that is as hard to define as it is easy to love – African, French, Caribbean and American influences collide with stirring rhythms of Haitian vodou drumming, the french café lilt of the accordion and the joyful percussive punctuation of the Rara horns – all mixed with scrappy, socially-driven lyrics and a dash of Motown swagger. This show is sure to be a fun sweaty dance party!

Jakobo

Singer, percussionist, and bandleader Jean Dorce, known as “Jakobo” by friends and fans, founded his group, Akbadja Zile in 2012. The band brings World Beat to new vibrational levels by presenting fusion music based firmly in the spiritual traditions of rural Haiti to new audiences. Akbadja Zile’s emphasis on traditional Haitian rhythms such as Dahomey, Nago, Congo, and rara, is a wake-up call to Haitians both at home and in the diaspora, as well as to World Beat fans around the world.
